When Do Sims Die of Old Age in The Sims 4?

When Do the Sims Die of Old Age

There comes a day when you have to say goodbye to your Sims. They follow the same life cycle as humans: their parents woo-hoo, someone gets pregnant, a baby Sim is born, they go through childhood, adolescence, adult life, they grow up, and hit the bucket.

It’s as simple as that.

How Long Does It Take for a Sim to Die of Old Age?

Your Sim will be about 90 to 100 days old when becoming an elder. That’s the moment when their age meter gets full. If your Sim has a normal lifespan, it usually takes take up to 48 hours until they pass away starting from the moment the age meter is full.

However, there have been Sims that lived for over 100 days, and some even reached 140 days. That’s a long time to be alive by Sim standards.

Without mods or particular age settings, the average lifespan of a Sim in The Sims 4 is 85 days, to which you can add about 10 days as an elder.

If you treat your Sims well, they often die somewhere in the 120-130 day range. Make sure they’re in good health and encourage them to exercise regularly and adopt a  vegetarian diet.

The Long-Lived trait helps your Sims live longer

On the other hand, if your Sim has got the Long-Lived reward trait, they will enjoy a longer lifespan as elders. As a matter of fact, they can live for about 25 days longer than other elders. That means approximately three times longer than the normal elder lifespan.

They can even live to the point when their own children are elders.

To get the Long-Lived reward trait, your Sim needs to complete the Bodybuilder aspiration.

Some Sims with the Long-Lived trait can even make it all the way until they become great-grandparents before kicking the bucket.

By the way, old age comes with a series of advantages for your Sim.

For example, they can finally retire after spending their adult years as active workforce members.

But there are also many major disadvantages that tag along.

Elder Sims walk a lot slower than young Sims, and sometimes it appears they’re moving in slow-motion.

Additionally, they can get the Dangerously Tired moodlet, die of overexertion, and, of course, old age.

You can adjust your Sims’s age settings and tweak the interval of time until your Sim dies of old age.

For example, you can set it to about 75 days for the Sims you don’t really like.

Or you can lend them a helping hand and make them exercise until they eventually die of overexertion.

Additionally, if you have other Sims in the household, ignore the elder and play only as young Sims.

Elder Sims tend to die quickly if they feel lonely and neglected. It’s sad, but it works if you want them to kick the bucket faster and meet the Grim Reaper.

When your Sim has got only 48 hours to live, they’ll get a notification to get their affairs in order.

Depending on your aging settings, Sims can age if you’re not playing the game. If you want your Sims to remain forever young, you can disable aging.

Learn more about Sim Deaths

If watching your Sims die of old age doesn’t really appeal to you, you can trigger death by starvation, electrocution, overexertion, meteorite, fire, Pufferfish, Cowplant, or drowning.

Other potentially deadly activities include drinking Beetle Juice, sniffing a Death Flower bouquet, rock climbing, using the Research Machine, relaxing in the sauna, using a vending machine, opening a Murphy Bed, or making a wish at the Wishing Well.

If you have Seasons, Sims can freeze to death, get heatstroke, or get struck by lightning.

The Sims 4 universe is full of angry flies, poisonous bugs, pets infected with Rabid Rodent Fever, and revengeful Mother Plants.

By the way, spellcasters can die of Magic Overload and vampires can burn to a crisp from sun exposure.

Emotional deaths such as Death by Anger, Laughter, and Embarrassment are also interesting options although they require a lot of work to trigger.

If your Sims live in the countryside, angry rabbits and chickens can attack and kill them.

If you want to get rid of teenagers, you’ve got two options: Death by Stink Capsule or Urban Myth.

Happy Simming!
