While The Sims 4 doesn’t have a FreeTime expansion pack focusing specifically on hobbies like The Sims 2 had, you can use skills as hobbies. The good news is that you can turn these skills into really lucrative hobbies. Let’s explore how you can make money from your Sims’ hobbies.
Best hobbies to make money in The Sims 4
Gardening
Gardening is a very lucrative hobby, especially if your Sim has a green thumb. Done right, it can turn into an extremely profitable activity. If you have Seasons and Cottage Living installed, success is guaranteed.
Your Sim can plant seeds, water and fertilize their plants, harvest the crops and then sell the produce at the market. You can grow oversized crops for an excellent return on investment ratio.
Some plants bring in more money than others. You can also plant a huge garden of money trees that will bring in a lot of money with every harvest.
Painting
Your Sim can also take up painting and earn some extra Simoleons from this hobby. As your Sim improves their painting skills, they can potentially create masterpieces that can sell for thousands of Simoleons. Painting is a hobby that requires constant effort. If you’re looking for a hobby that doesn’t require too much time and effort, you should pick another one.
Writing
If your Sim is a skilled user of words, they can level up their writing skill and use it to write books. Sims can earn royalties for the books they publish for up to 20 days. Mystery and biography books pay the most money. Your Sim should be able to write up to three books every day.
Music
If you Sim is really passionate about playing an instrument, help them level up their skill so that they can unlock new ways to make money. As your Sim improves their guitar, piano, violin or organ skills, they can do some busking in the streets to earn some extra money.
If you have City Living installed, find a busking platform and show off your skills. Your Sim can play the guitar everywhere. All they need to do is bring their guitar in their inventory and start playing. You don’t necessarily need a busking platform to play the guitar. Townies will tip your Sim based on their skill level.

Photography
Sims that are skilled photographers can sell high-quality photos for a nice sum of money. If you have Get To Work installed, you may want to explore photography as a hobby. Don’t forget to upgrade your equipment so that you can always take high-quality shoots. You can then sell the pictures and cash in the money.
Fishing
There are plenty of fishing spots available in The Sims 4. The higher the fishing skill, the higher the chances to catch more fish. Your Sim can then sell the fish they caught, use it to fertilize crops or cook various dishes. Rare fish species are very valuable.
Knitting and Cross-Stitching
Knitting is a really fun hobby. Grab a yarn basket, sit in a rocking chair and start knitting socks and beanies. As your Sim improves their knitting skill, they can knit sweaters, baby onesies, toys, and so on.
The downside is that it costs 10 Simoleons to list and sell your knitted items on Plopsy (if you have Nifty Knitting). Knitting is not as lucrative as painting or gardening, but it’s a fun way to earn some extra money.
If you have Cottage Living installed, you can try your hand at cross-stitching. As your Sim maxes out their cross stitching skill, they’ll unlock new patterns. You can then sell your creations on Plopsy.
