There are countless hostile elements in Elden Ring and they’re ready to get you. At some point, your character will die. But what exactly happens after your character hits the bucket? Let’s find out!

How does death work in Elden Ring?

When you die in Elden Ring, you’ll drop all your Runes and respawn will full HP at the last Site of Grace you visited. If the Stake of Marike statue is near the place you died, you can choose to respawn there instead of the last Site of Grace.

There’s an interesting attribute called Arcane that affects the Bleed Status and Vitality which is the stat that shows your resistance to death. Get more Arcane points to increase Vitality and to make it harder for your enemies to kill you. Arcane can protect your during attacks that would normally take you out instantly.

You also leave bloodstains on the spot you died. Other players can use the Touch bloostain interaction to see how you died.

What do you lose when you die in Elden Ring?

When you die in Elden Ring, you’ll lose all the Runes collected up to that point. After respawning, you can go back to the place where you died, and collect your Runes. Use the compass to navigate to the place of your death. If retrieving your Runes is a priority for you, try to avoid all combat. You don’t want to die again.

However, if you die in co-op mode as a summoned player, you don’t lose anything.

Do you lose Runes when you die in Elden Ring?

When you die in Elden Ring, you lose all the Runes you have on you. But you can claim them back by visiting the same spot after respawning. However, the runes you failed to collect before you died are lost forever.

By the way, if you’re not getting all of your Runes back, most likely Gatekeeper Gostoc stole them from you. The good news is that this unusual problem occurs only when you die in the Stormveil Castle.
