There is no difference between planting seeds in the ground versus planting them in planter boxes. Plants and trees grow at the same rate when planted in a planter box, a pot, or in the ground.
The planter boxes and pots are mainly for decor. They do add a more organized look to your garden and allow you to grow plants indoors.
However, they won’t make plants grow faster, or increase their quality.
If you’re on a budget, you can plant the seeds directly in the soil. Purchasing a lot of planter boxes and pots can be quite expensive, especially if you’re Sim is not earning that much money.
Well, if your Sim is not rich, you can buy a planter box and then use it to order more seeds. In this manner, you don’t need to buy a computer to order seeds.
Needless to say, a planter box is cheaper than a computer.
Planter boxes can accommodate up to four small plants or one tree.
Why should I use planter boxes in The Sims 4?
You can use planter boxes to grow plants indoors. In this manner, you can grow plants all year round without worrying about seasonality.
As a quick reminder, some plants grow and blossom only in a specific season. If you keep them indoors, they’ll be green all the time.
Additionally, planter boxes make your garden look nice and organized. If you grow your outdoor plants in planter boxes, you’ll have fewer puddles on the ground when it’s raining.
I personally like using planter boxes in my greenhouse to make everything look much more organized.
If you own the Werewolves pack, you can use planter boxes of different colors to match your existing decor.
If you want to make your Sim’s life easier, you can use Hydroponic planter boxes that automatically water your plants. Your plants won’t wither and die even if your Sim forgets to water them.
The only catch is that these planter boxes are available in Eco-Lifestyle. In other words, if you don’t own this expansion pack, you can’t use them.
How can I become a better gardener in The Sims 4?
If you want to increase the growth rate of your plants and evolve them fast, you need to level up your Sim’s Gardening skills and use fertilizers. The best fertilizer is fish.
Having the Good Soil lot trait helps tremendously, so make sure to enable it.
Additionally, buying the Green Thumb trait can enhance plant growth.
By the way, once you get high enough Gardening skills, you can talk to plants. The conversations you have with them will fill your Sim’s social needs.

If you want to experiment with a different state, you can have your Sim eat a Forbidden Fruit and watch them turn into a PlantSim.
