Elden Ring: Why can’t I apply Grease to weapons?

Elden-Ring-cant-apply-grease

There is a plethora of consumable items that you can use in Elden Ring to enhance the destructive capacities of your weapons. For example, you can apply a generous coating of Grease to alter your weapon’s skills. But sometimes this option is not available.

Why is the Grease button greyed out in Elden Ring?

The option to apply Grease is greyed out for boss weapons, enchanted weapons, special weapons that you can upgrade to +10 only, as well as weapons with inherent elemental affinities including blood. You cannot apply Grease to weapons that contain Ashes of War.

However, you can use Grease on weapons that already have had their skill altered provided that the affinity change doesn’t give them an element. You need to switch the affinity on your weapon to standard to be able to buff it with Grease.

How to check if you can buff your weapon with Grease

To check if you can buff your weapon with Grease, see if it uses Smithing Stones and goes to +25. If your weapon uses Somber Stones to upgrade and you can only level it up to +10, this indicates it’s a special weapon and you can’t apply a coat of Grease to it.

Weapons can only have two modifiers

Weapons can have two distinct damage types or modifiers. You can’t have more than two affinities per weapon. Ashes of War and Grease count as modifiers.

For example, Bloodhounds Fang only has Bleed, causing blood loss buildup. You can enhance this weapon by enchanting it or adding Grease.

On the other hand, the Dragon Halberd has Ice and Lightning. That’s why you cannot add anything to it.

  • “Halberd shaped like a dragon, enwreathed with both ice and lightning.”

Conclusion

You can’t apply Grease when a weapon already has a special effect going on. Grease is incompatible with Ashes of War. You can either change the weapon’s affinity to Keen and use Grease, or keep the affinity but don’t apply Grease.

For example, if you use the Blood affinity, you can’t apply Grease, as your weapon already causes blood loss buildup. If you want to use Grease, use the Heavy, Quality or Keen affinity instead.

And now you know!
