In The Sims 4, you can mark the households you rarely or never play as “Unplayed.” But what exactly does marking a household as “unplayed” do? And what happens to unplayed Sims?

What happens when you mark a household as unplayed in The Sims 4?

When you mark a household as unplayed in the Sims 4, this means you allow the game to cull the household members when the max population threshold has been reached.

To mark a household as unplayed, go to Manage Worlds and open the household. You’ll see a Plumbob icon in the left-hand corner of the family portrait screen. Click it to make the household unplayed.

Unplayed households that are not housed on a lot are at risk for culling. This means the game can autonomously delete unplayed Sims when the max population number has been reached.

Housed Sims cannot get culled. But unplayed housed Sims will get deleted soon after they die.

Keep in mind that The Sims 4 continuously generates new Sims.  To prevent your favorite Sims from getting deleted, move them into lots and mark them as played.

When you mark a household as unplayed, every relationship except with household members and played Sims will get deleted. The game will quickly cull the relationships of unplayed Sims.

The Sims 4 supports different aging settings for played and unplayed Sims. For example, you can tweak your game settings so that played Sims never age while letting unplayed Sims age normally.

Played Sims won’t change jobs while you rotate away. On the other hand, unplayed Sims will get random jobs. The game will randomly change the careers of unplayed Sims.

Unplayed Sims can be NPC service Sims. This means they can show up in your world as maids, vendors, baristas, butlers, nannies, delivery persons, and so on.

Played Sims can’t become NPC service Sims.
