At the end of Ranni’s quest, Blaidd will be waiting for you at the bottom of the tower ready to kill you. His sudden transformation can come as a shock for many players.
Let’s explore what might be causing this sudden change of behavior.
Why does Blaidd attack you in Elden Ring?
Blaidd always becomes hostile and attacks you at the end of Ranni’s questline. That’s intended to happen. If you kill the giant bears before meeting him, that will also make him aggressive. The same thing happens if you accidentally attack him before completing Ranni’s quest.
Sometimes, Blaidd can become hostile for no apparent reason at all. Some players think that his behavior is triggered after clearing the Black Knife Catacombs. The body on the ground near him seems to be the same Black Knife Assassin as in the catacombs.
Other players noticed that going through the ruins and killing the sleeping bear is what triggers Blaidd’s hostility. They confirmed that when the bear destroys the pillar Blaidd is standing on is when he becomes aggressive.
Players who are doing Ranni’s questline may sometimes get confused and believe they killed Blaidd while trying to get to the Lake of Rot. Rest assured, it’s not Blaidd that you killed.
That’s only a Baleful Shadow imitating Blaidd’s appearance.
The Baleful Shadow you fight before the Lake of Rot is a servant of the Two Fingers.
That part can be a bit confusing.
Can I use Celestial Dew to de-aggro Blaidd?
If Blaidd becomes aggressive early, you can use Celestial Dew to clear your sins at the Church of Vows and de-aggro him. However, Celestial Dew becomes useless at the end of Ranni’s questline. This is because Blaidd is supposed to become hostile at that point.
Conclusion
Blaidd automatically becomes aggressive if you attack him accidentally or on purpose. Refrain from attacking him if you don’t want to trigger his aggressive behavior before the end of Ranni’s questline.

You do not have to kill him to get to the lake of rot
You need to really check your info before putting up articles like this. The Baleful Shadow you fight before the Lake of Rot is NOT Blaidd but a servant of the Two Fingers. Each Empyrean was bestowed a half-wolf guardian by the Two Fingers. But even though Ranni turned her back on the Two Fingers & the Golden Order Blaidd stayed loyal.
Thank you for your feedback.
You’re right. That’s only a Baleful Shadow imitating Blaidd’s appearance.
That part can be really confusing.
I updated the guide accordingly.
