If you want to adopt a child or a pet in The Sims 4, there are certain steps you need to follow in order to successfully complete the process.
In this quick guide, I’m going to show you how you can bring new Sims or pets into your household.
How can I adopt a child in Sims 4?
Follow the steps below to adopt a child in The Sims 4:
- Click on the computer
- Select Household
- Select Adopt
- The game will list all the children available for adoption
- Select the child that you want to adopt
The Sims 4 will then show an animation of your Sim walking home with the child they just adopted. The adoption process has been successfully completed and your household has a new member.
There are three categories of children available for adoption: babies, toddlers, and children up to 10 years old.
Keep in mind that adoptions are not free. You need to pay 1,000 Simoleons to adopt a child. Once the child has arrived at your home, you can change their last name.
Just as in real life, you’ll also get a few days off to bond with the adopted child and become best friends.
Can you adopt a teenager in The Sims 4?
You cannot adopt a teenager in The Sims 4. This option is not available. There are only three age categories available for adoption: babies, toddlers, and children.
Why can’t I adopt a child in Sims 4?
If you can’t adopt a child in The Sims 4 make sure the adoptive Sim is a young adult or older. Teens cannot adopt. The option to adopt a child is not available if there are already eight Sims in the household.
If some of your game files got corrupted, certain game features may stop working. Go to your Origin library and repair your game files to fix the problem.
Make sure to take good care of your kid’s needs. If you neglect them, they’ll get whisked away and you may never see them again. If your Sim is too busy to take care of their kids, you can hire a butler to help you.
How do I adopt a pet in Sims 4?
Follow the steps below to adopt a pet in The Sims 4:
- Click on the computer
- Select Household
- Select Adopt cat or Adopt dog
- The game will list all the cats and dogs available for adoption
- Select the cat or dog you want to adopt
The adoption agent will bring you the cat or dog you want to adopt. Have your Sim play with the potential pet to see if they’re a good fit for you.
Click on the Adopt button when you’re sure you’ve found the right pet for your Sim.
There is also a list of traits available that include information related to your future pet’s gender, age, color, and so on. The pet adoption fee in the Sims 4 is $200. If you want to, you can adopt three new pets at once.
It is worth noting that The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs DLC allows you to adopt stray dogs and cats.
How do you adopt a stray dog or cat in Sims 4?
To adopt a stray dog or cat, approach the animal and play with it for a few minutes. This will raise the relationship meter. After a while, the option to adopt the animal will pop up on the screen. Click on it to adopt the stray animal you just befriended.
The adoption option is available only after you’ve interacted a few times with the animal.
How can I put up pets for adoption in Sims 4?
To put up pets for adoption in The Sims 4, click on the. House icon, select Hire a Service and then select Put up pet for adoption.
If you no longer have the time to take care of all your pets or they simply bred on their own and you’ve got too many pets, putting them for adoption is the safest and simplest solution to use. This action doesn’t generate any fees.
Of course, you can also sell your pets if you want to and cash in some money.

Why don’t I have the option to adopt a pet in Sims 4?
If the option to adopt a pet is not available in The Sims 4, remove Mods and Custom Content. Move the Mods folder to your desktop, repair your game files and restart the game. Check if the option to adopt a cat or dog is available.
