To build multigenerational houses in The Sims 4, you need the For Rent expansion pack. Use the Unit Configuration tool to divide the house into units so that different households can occupy each unit.
In this manner, you can keep your legacy families together. You can have family members on the same lot but in different households.
As a quick reminder, the For Rent expansion pack is all about Rental Units. However, you can use this system to build multigenerational houses without having to control so many Sims at once.
If you like playing with big extended families, For Rent is the perfect pack for you.
You can build up to 6 units per Residential Rental.
A full Sim household of 8 Sims can comfortably reside in a single unit.
You can add separate lot challenges for each unit. The traits and challenges are specific to each unit. They don’t have to be specific to the Residential Rental as a whole.
Ask Your Family to Pay Rent or Set the Rent to Zero
There are two ways to deal with the rent system when it comes to building multigenerational families: ask family members to pay rent or set the rent to zero.
You can be a good landlord and ask them to pay a small amount of money. They won’t even perceive it as rent. Think of this amount of money as their contribution to the overall household expenses.
Of course, if you feel that’s not necessary, you can simply set the rent to zero.
How to Manage a Multigenerational Household
Spice things up by throwing family gatherings or special events. Get everyone together for some good old-fashioned bonding That can be over a meal, a game, or just a cozy chat on the couch.
Try to make the whole bunch feel like one big, happy family.
Create schedules that give each Sim their time in the spotlight—let them chase career dreams, work on skills, and meet individual needs.
The key here is teamwork. Maybe one Sim handles dinner while another tackles the household chores.
Give your Sim autonomy and let them take care of stuff on their own.
