The Sims 4: How to build a child’s confidence

Children can have neutral, low, or high confidence in The Sims 4 Growing Together. They start off with neutral confidence. This is a fluctuating trait throughout their childhood.

A child’s Confidence level depends on how much they’re succeeding or failing at school or when doing various activities, and how their caregivers are responding.

To boost your child’s Confidence level, you can go to Friendly interactions, select Compliments and praise their efforts in social growth after they acquired new social skills.

Make sure to reinforce positive behaviors with compliments and other positive interactions.

Confident kids will get the I Believe in Me buff.

That’s when the most important person in their lives believes in them: themselves.

A child Sim’s confidence level can increase or decrease depending on skill gain, school performance, positive or negative socialization, succeeding or failing at skill-based activities, getting Confident or Embarrassed moods, and caregivers criticizing or praising them.

⇒ Quick Tip:

  • Have your child Sim brush their teeth before going to school, doing skill-based activities, or socializing with other Sims to get them in a Confident mood.

Criticism lowers your child Sim’s confidence

There’s also the option to Criticize Lack of Social Growth if you notice your child is not behaving the way you’d want them to.

Criticizing a child will immediately affect their confidence.

Failing at things will negatively affect your child’s confidence. For example, if they’re playing on the monkey bar and they fall off, their confidence level will drop.

Kids lacking confidence in themselves might get a fear that wasn’t there before. They may also start feeling bad about things.

Low or high self-esteem transfers to teenagehood

When a child ages up with low or high confidence, they get a locked-in trait that is either Low or High Self-Esteem.

This means they’ll have low or high self-esteem as a teen.

If their confidence is neutral when they aged up, nothing happens.

I’ve personally struggled with low self-esteem and confidence all my life. I love the new child confidence system in Growing Together.

I think it will make Simmers more aware of how easy it is to break a child’s self-confidence and how difficult it is to build it back.

Be kind to your child Sims!

Happy Simming!
