Troubleshoot League of Legends Error 002

troubleshoot League of Legends error code 002

League of Legends is a complex game and sometimes errors do occur. Error 002 usually occurs when players don’t have enough free space to download the latest patches.

As a quick reminder, you need at least 8GB of free space on the drive where LOL is installed in order to download and install game updates.

However, there are many cases where this condition is met, yet error 002 still appears with the following description:

The patch was unable to download to your hard drive. This error is usually caused by not having enough room on your disk for the download. Please ensure that your computer has at least 8GB of free space on the drive where League is installed and that you have the necessary permissions to write to the drive.

Why won’t League of Legends update? There can be multiple causes blocking LoL from downloading and installing the latest updates. Some of the most common ones are: your connection is unstable, there’s not enough free space on your hard drive, some of your game files got corrupted, or your antivirus and firewall are blocking the update.

In this article, we’re going to list 3 solutions that you can use to fix LOL error 002.

How to Fix League of Legends error code 002

Fix 1 – Check your disk

As the error description suggests, make sure that you have 9GB of free space on the disk where you installed the game.

Many gamers confirmed that having 8GB of free space is often not enough to install the updates.

Uninstall any apps and programs that you no longer need or move them to another drive to make a little more room for the game update.

Use Disk Cleanup to free up space on your disk. Right-click the disk where you installed the game > select Properties. Then go to the General tab and hit Disk Cleanup.

The tool will then tell you how much space it can free up and all you need to do is hit the Clean up system files button.

Temporary files can eat up much space on your disk. Try using a dedicated tool such as CCleaner (free) to delete temporary files as well as other junk files from third-party apps and browsers.

Fix 2 – Run the Hextech Repair Tool

The Hextech Repair Tool is a very useful software that automatically detects and repairs LOL tech issues and errors.

The tool is compatible with both Windows and Mac and can fix some of League of Legend’s most pervasive tech issues.

You can download the Hextech Repair Tool for Windows or Mac computers from Riot Game’s support page.

If you’re on Windows, right-click and select ‘Run as administrator’ once you’ve downloaded and installed the tool.

If this pint-sized troubleshooter can’t solve your problem, it automagically collects system information, and LoL logs into a .zip folder. The option is available on Windows only right now.

You can then send that folder to  Riot Games Support so as to provide support agents with more details about your problem.

Fix 3 – Turn off Firewall

Sometimes, your Firewall may block your connection to the server and cause various other issues.

To fix LOL error 002, try disabling your Firewall and then install the patch once again.

Here’s how to do that on Windows:

  1. Go to Control Panel -> select System and Security -> in the new window, select Windows Firewall
  2. A new window will appear and on the left-hand pane, you’ll see ‘Turn Windows Firewall on or off’ -> click the respective option

There you go, we hope that one of these solutions helped you fix League of Legends error 002. Tell us which fix worked for you.
