Steam Fails to Launch on MacBook | Troubleshoot It

Steam Won’t Start on Mac: How to Fix it

If Steam is not launching on your Macbook, the company recommends that you update your MacOS version, verify your game cache files and disable non-essential Mac applications and programs.

Follow Steam’s recommendations before using additional solutions.

Fix 1 –  Delete Steam.AppBundle

Many users confirmed that removing Steam.AppBundle from ~/Library/Application Support/Steam triggered a redownload that quickly fixed the problem.

Fix 2-  Reinstall Steam

  1. Navigate to Library> Application Support> Steam
  2. Delete each and every file except for userdata
  3. Reinstall Steam.

Fix 3 – Rename the Steam folder

Quite a large number of users confirmed that renaming the Steam folder is another quick solution to fix Steam launch issues.

So, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Click twice on an empty spot on desktop > go to Finder.
  2. Select Go in the drop down menu > click on Go To Folder.
  3. Copy and paste ~/Library/Application Support.
  4. Now, rename the Steam folder and try to launch Steam again.
  5. Keep in mind that your Mac computer installs Steam in two locations: /Library/Application
  6. Support and ~/Library/Application Support.

So, there are actually two Library folders and one of them is hidden.  You need to go to the ~/Library/Application Support folder for this solution to work.

Fix 4 – Launch Steam from Contents

  1. Navigate to Finder > locate Steam
  2. Right click on it > go to Show package contents
  3. Open Contents > click into MacOS
  4. Scroll all the way down and locate steam_osx then open it.

Fix 5 – Use the Terminal app

Launch the Terminal app and type: sh /Applications/Steam.app/Contents/MacOS/steam.sh

This command forces the Steam app to update and once the process has finished, the app will open automatically.
