How do I reduce the disc noise on my PS5?

ps5 loud disc drive

Many PS5 owners complained their consoles sometimes spin the game disc too loudly. This may happen once every 20 minutes or so. Other users may encounter this issue just three or four times per gaming session.

Nevertheless, your PS5 console spinning the disc too loudly is not a pleasant thing to hear, especially if you bought a brand-new console.

This happens whether you’re playing the game on the disc or not. In theory, the PS5 should be much quieter than the PS4, as Sony explains:

Our goal is for PS5 to be quieter than PS4. This is due to changes in the power delivery and cooling systems, as well as custom engineering work including a custom heatsink and a liquid metal-based thermal interface material.

How to fix loud disc on PlayStation 5

Check for overheating issues

First things first, make sure your console is placed in a well-ventilated place. In case there’s any heat source near it, do move it away.

Additionally, don’t place the console in contact with the wall surface. There should be a distance of at least 10 cm (4 inches) between the console and the wall.

Third, don’t place your PS5 console on a rug or carpet. If you decide to place it on the floor, put it directly on the floor surface. And please don’t cover it with a cloth.

Check the vents. In case there’s any dust buildup, use a hand vacuum clear and gently remove it.

Eject the disc

Eject the disc from your console. When using a PS5 console, it’s important to properly insert your game discs.

Improperly inserting a disc can lead to various issues, including loud noises, difficulty reading the disc, or even damage to the disc or the console itself.

This should not be a problem if you’re not playing the game from the disc.

Unplug your console

Unplugging your console for a short while functions as a system reboot, which can address small software glitches and performance problems that may have built up over time. It offers the system a clean slate, potentially enhancing its overall performance.

During operation, gaming consoles generate heat. Prolonged use without adequate ventilation can result in overheating.

By unplugging your console and allowing it to cool down, you give the internal components a chance to rest, reducing the risk of overheating.

This, in turn, preserves performance and helps prevent potential hardware damage.

Take a screwdriver and tighten the screws

If the disc reader noise is too loud, Sony recommends tightening the screws.

  1. Turn off your PS5. Unplug the power cord and disconnect all cables.
  2. Remove the stand. Then put your palms on the glossy panel. Your fingers should now rest on the far side of the console.
  3. Place the console sideways. The front of the console is facing you.
  4. Then remove the bottom panel that has the disc slot. At this stage, the panel with the logo should be on the table.
  5. Place your palms on the top of the panel. Grip the edge of the panel.
  6. Lift the corner up and away from the console. The panel should shift a bit and you’ll hear a click.
  7. Now, lift the panel off and locate the four circular pieces on the optical drive.
  8. Besides these pieces, you’ll find a circular dust cover made of black plastic.
  9. Gently remove the dust cover. You should now be able to see the screw beneath. So far, so good.
  10. Next, turn the screw clockwise until you see the disc peeking out of the disc slot. You may need to turn the screw five or seven times. Be gentle, don’t apply too much pressure.
  11. Take the disc out of the disc slot.
  12. Cover the screw with the circular dust cover.
  13. Put the bottom panel over the exposed section of the console, a few centimeters away from the edge.
  14. Slide the panel back into place. You should hear a click again.
  15. Reconnect the cables and turn on your console.
