This guide discusses a series of quick troubleshooting solutions that you can use to fix your Twitch chat window if you’re unable to type in anything.

Twitch may sometimes fail to capture your keyboard input. When this issue occurs, you can’t type in the chat box, no matter what channels you use. This problem can manifest in a variety of ways. For example, no words appear in the chat window, or you may get an error message that says “This action cannot be completed. Try again later”.

Before trying to troubleshoot the problem, make sure Twitch hasn’t temporarily suspended your account. That could explain why you can’t type in anything in the chat. By the way, if this issue affects the Twitch app, check if you can type in the browser.

How to fix Twitch chat not letting you type

  • Collapse the right panel and extend it again. Many gamers confirmed this quick workaround did the trick for them. Try it out and check if it works for you as well.
  • Restart your router. If your connection is to blame for this issue, restarting the router should fix it.
  • Use the pop out chat window and accept the cookies. If you don’t accept the cookies prompt, you won’t be able to use the pop out chat. Use the link below to access the pop out chat:
  • Sign out of Twitch and close your browser. Then launch your browser again, sign back in and check the results.
  • Wipe your cache and cookies. It’s not uncommon for your browser cache and cookies to interfere with Twitch’s scripts. On your browser, go to More options, select History, click on Clear browsing data. Then clear the cache and cookies from the last four weeks.
  • Disable your extensions. If clearing the cache and cookies didn’t solve the problem, try disabling all of your extensions.
  • Update your browser. Don’t forget to update your browser. Outdated browser versions may not process Twitch’s scripts properly. If the issue persists, go ahead and reinstall your browser.
