Elden Ring supports cross-gen play on the same console family. However, there are some major differences between the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game in terms of graphics performance.
Elden Ring Graphics: PS4 vs PS5
Main issue: Inconsistent Frame Rate
The PS4 Pro version of Elden Ring is more stable FPS-wise than the PS5 version. Your PS5 console cannot lock the frame rate to 60 FPS in Performance mode.
As a result, you’ll often see judder as the frame rate varies between 40 and 60 FPS. Expect the frame rate to hit the 40FPS during the Agheel fight and other boss fights.
The fewest FPS drops occur when playing the PS4 version of the game on your PS5. This is because your PS5 console will automatically use the PS4’s settings.
The PS4 version of Elden Ring uses lower resolution settings and less detailed environments compared to the native PS5 version.
In other words, the lower graphics settings make the PS4 version of Elden Ring easier for the PS5 to run. As a result, your PS5 can direct more resources to maintain a consistent frame rate.
Reduces graphics quality and details
The downside to running the PS4 version of Elden Ring on PS5 is that certain graphics elements won’t be available.
For example, there will be less vegetation in the environment and reduced grass density. Camera control will be quite janky.
Additionally, you’ll also experience low-quality shadows, slightly longer loading times, and so on.
Resolution isn’t everything
If you want to experience the amazing Elden Ring visuals, then you should definitely go for the native PS5 version of the game, and sacrifice performance and FPS consistency.
After all, a top-notch resolution isn’t everything. For many gamers, graphics isn’t actually a deal breaker.
If you want better graphics and don’t mind an FPS that fluctuates, go for the native PS5 version of Elden Ring.
Gamers prefer the PS4 version of Elden Ring
According to the latest stats, the number of Elden Ring PS4 copies sold is more than double that of the PS5 version.
This indicates the majority of Elden Ring players prefer to trade visuals for performance and a stable frame rate.
