Elden Ring players can have multiple characters and play them rotationally. But can you also have multiple save files? Let’s find out!
Can I have multiple save files in Elden Ring?
You can have multiple save files in Elden Ring if you created multiple characters. Saves are tied to individual characters. Each character has only one save file that auto saves virtually every second. However, you won’t be able to manually save your progress before a boss fight. The game takes care of everything automatically.
The mantra to remember is this: one character, one save file.
Let’s say you have two characters. You play as character A for 10 minutes, and then go back to the main screen, select character B and play a bit. When you go back to the main screen, you’re prompted to select which game you want to load. You can choose between character A and character B. Each character will be right where you left them off.
How to back up your Elden Ring save files
Always back up your Elden Ring save files locally. Go to Elden Ring’s saves location and manually back up the files. On PC, the Elden Ring save files are located under C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing.
Alternatively, you can also use Steam’s backup feature.
- Open Steam.
- Go to your Library.
- Right-click on Elden Ring.
- Select Properties.
- Click on the Local Files tab.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose the game you want to back up and hit Next.
- Select the folder where you want to save the backup files.
- Note: By default, Steam saves your backup files under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Backups.
- Enter a name for your backup file.
- Hit Next to start the backup process.
