If your Xbox got stuck on a grey screen after installing the latest updates, or after pausing your games, follow the troubleshooting solutions below to fix the problem.

Why is my Xbox showing a grey screen?

If your Xbox screen is grey, this may indicate the console did not boot up properly. Faulty HDMI cables or ports, and incorrect display settings could also cause this issue. Outdated Xbox system software and TV firmware can trigger a lot of issues, including this grey screen problem.

How do you fix a grey screen on Xbox One?

Note: If you’re an Insider, maybe your Xbox system version is bugged. Xbox Insider releases usually pack more bugs than the stable system versions.

Do a hard reset and unplug the console

Press the Power button and keep holding it until your console shuts down. Wait for one minute, power up the device and check the results.

If the issue persists, press the Power button again to shut down the console. But this time, don’t restart it. Instead, unplug the power cable to get rid of flea power. Wait again for one minute, plug the power cable back in, and check if the green screen issue persists.

If the problem won’t go away, perform another hard reset, unplug the power cable, and hold the eject and Power button at startup. If the console goes to an update screen, wait until it downloads the updates.

Check your HDMI connection

  • Make sure your TV is set to the correct input signal (HDMI).
  • Check the HDMI cable connection on both ends and make sure the cable is properly plugged in. You don’t want loose cable.
  • Make sure the HDMI cable is plugged into the “out to TV” console port.
  • Switch to a different HDMI port and check if you notice any improvements.
  • Use a different HDMI cable, maybe the one you’re using is faulty.
  • If possible, connect your console to a different TV.

Update your TV and Xbox

Go to your smart TV’s settings, and check for system updates. Make sure you’re running the latest firmware version on your device. Restart your TV after installing the latest updates, and check if the grey screen glitch is still there. Don’t forget to check for Xbox updates as well.

Reset display settings

  1. Eject your disc.
  2. Press and hold the Xbox button on the console to turn it off.
  3. Press and hold the Xbox button and the Eject button. You’ll hear one beep right away, and then a second beep 10 seconds later.
    • Note: If you own an Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, press and hold the Xbox button and the Bind button instead.
  4. Release the buttons after the second beep.
  5. Your console should boot into low resolution mode (640 × 480).
  6. Press the Xbox button, go to System, and select Settings.
  7. Then navigate to Display & sound, and select Video output.
  8. Select the resolution you want to use using the drop-down menu.

Reset your console

Keep in mind that this action will remove all the accounts stored on your console, as well as any Home Xbox associations.

  1. Press the Xbox button, and select System.
  2. Then navigate to Settings, go to System, and select Console info.
  3. Select Reset console.
  4. Select Reset and keep my games & apps.
    • This option will reset the OS and delete all corrupted data while keeping your games or apps. You don’t need to download or reinstall your games.
