As of November 2019, EA introduced The Sim 4 Legacy Edition as a solution to allow gamers to enjoy the game on unsupported systems. This edition of the game is available only for those who already own the game and comes with a series of limitations that let many players down.
The Sims 4 no longer supports Non-Metal MacOS devices and 32-bit Windows computers. If you own one such device, the only The Sims game version you can play is the Legacy Edition.
If you need to switch to The Sims 4 Legacy Edition, the game will display the following message: Unable to start due to missing game data.
Steps to switch to The Sims 4 Legacy Edition
On Windows computers, all you need to do is download the Legacy Edition. Then launch the game and enjoy the fun.
On MacBooks, launch your Original game client, go to your Game Library, right-click on The Sims 4 and hit Play.
The gallery is not available in The Sims 4 Legacy Edition
Perhaps the most annoying Legacy Edition limitation is the lack of access to the Gallery and other online features such as messages, social interactions and downloadable content.
How do you access the gallery on Sims 4 Legacy Edition? There is currently no option to access the gallery on The Sims 4 Legacy Edition since this feature is not supported by this game version. EA disabled access to the gallery in November 2019 and it’s unlikely the company re-enables the gallery tab any time soon.
If you want to enjoy the latest game extensions and access all the online features of the game, you need to upgrade your computer. Once again, any MacBook older than 2012 and 32-bit Windows computers can no longer play the full Sims 4 game.
