This guide discusses why the annoying Green Screen of Death issue occurs on your PS5 console, and how you can fix it.

Rule number one: if you’re getting the Green Screen of Death on PS5, don’t freak out. This is an usual problem, but you can quickly fix it. Follow the instructions below to get the job done.

Why is my PS5 screen green?

The Green Screen of Death error on your PS5 usually indicates your TV is the culprit. Maybe your console is not properly connected to your TV. Additionally, your TV’s HDMI cable or port might be faulty. Incompatible TV settings could also trigger this problem.

How do I fix the Green Screen of Death error on PS5?

Unplug your TV and use a different HDMI port

Many users fixed this issue simply by unplugging their TVs. Unplug your TV from the wall outlet and then switch to a different HDMI port. Meanwhile, restart your console as well. Then, power up your TV, connect the cables and check the results.

Some users also confirmed that a simple power cycling (turning the TV off and on again) worked for them.

The green screen issue might have something to do with your TV switching in and out of HDR. Or maybe there’s a bad HDCP connection or negotiation between your TV’s HDMI port and your PS5 when that port is first connected. Apparently, the issue persist even after you disconnect the two devices. Fortunately, switching to a different HDMI port usually solves the problem.

Update your TV firmware

Make sure you’re running the latest firmware version on your TV. Update your device, restart it, connect it to your console, and check the results.

Disable HDR and Gaming Mode

If your smart TV has an HDR option, or some sort of Gaming mode, make sure to disable it. Many users confirmed their PS5 home screen popped right up after disabling these options. And they didn’t even had to power cycle or unplug their TVs.

Restore TV settings

If possible, try to connect your PS5 to a different TV. If the green screen is gone, this indicates your TV is the culprit. Go to TV settings, and reset your settings to original defaults. Check if resetting your TV did the trick.

Don’t use Rest Mode

Some users complained the Green Screen of Death problem occurred after putting their consoles into Rest Mode.

My green screen issue happens sporadically when I put the system in Rest Mode and it causes it to crash and a data rebuild is needed when restarting.

While many users have used this option without any problems, some of you may experience various Rest Mode-related issues. So, disable Rest Mode, and check if the problem persists.
