Troubleshoot Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Lagging Issues

troubleshoot Nintendo Switch lag issues

Some Nintendo Switch users complained about their Joy-Con controllers lagging after a few months of usage — usually, after more than 6 months.

For example, when users push one of the sticks and let go right away, the camera keeps rotating even though users stopped pushing the stick a few seconds ago. Or, their character won’t jump when users press the jump button — or it will jump after a few seconds.

If you’re experiencing similar issues, this guide might help you fix your Joy-Con lag.

Why is my Joy-Con lagging? Running outdated firmware versions of your Joy-Con might cause lag issues. You may experience the same issue if the controllers did not sync correctly to the console.

Fixing Joy-Con Lag Problems

1. Re-sync your controllers

This is the solution that worked for most users. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to System Settings
  2. Scroll down to Controllers and Sensors
  3. Select Disconnect Controllers
  4. Confirm your choice and wait until the message All controllers have been disconnected appears on the screen
  5. You need to detach your controllers from the console
  6. Take them off and then power cycle your console by holding down the power button. Power off you console completely, don’t just put it to sleep mode
  7. Turn your console back on
  8. You now need to re-sync your controllers
  9. Simply slide your Joy-Con controllers on
  10. Test your Joy-Con controllers to make sure they work properly now.

2. Additional fixes

If the first solution did not work for you, here are some additional suggestions:

  • Detach your controllers and play in handheld mode and you should experience less lag.
  • If you’ve got a second set of Joy-Cons, feel free to use them. Switching to a different set of controllers may solve your problem.
  • Make sure all the other devices in the room are using a cable connection. This quick workaround should fix the problem if this is an Internet-related issue triggered by wireless interference.
  • Get the latest system update for your Nintendo Switch console. Install the latest firmware update for your Joy-Cons.

We hope something helps.
