Many gamers complained their PS5 screen may sometimes flicker white, green or black randomly. Oftentimes, this issue occurs after enabling the HDR settings. Let’s see how you can quickly troubleshoot this problem and resume your gaming session.
Why is my PlayStation screen flickering? Screen flickering usually indicates there’s been a handshake problem from the HDCP or transfer rate to the HDMI cable. Many PS5 gamers confirmed that setting the transfer rate to -1 or -2 usually fixes the problem.
How do I fix PS5 screen flickering?
Restart your console
Many gamers confirmed that restarting the console usually fixes the problem. Of course, this is only a quick workaround. The issue goes away once you restart your PS5 console, but having to do that too often can become quite annoying.
Change your transfer rate settings
By the way, many gamers started getting this issue after editing the HDR settings. Change back the settings, and disable HDR on PS5 and TV, and check if the issue is gone.
If it persists, change the 4K transfer rate to -2. Some users said that setting the 4K transfer to -1 worked as well. That seems to have fixed the issue for many users.
- Navigate to PS5 Settings, and go to Screen and Video.
- Then, select Video Output, and go to 4K Video Transfer Rate.
- Change the transfer rate settings from Automatic to -1 or -2.
- Save the changes and check the results.
Tweak your HDCP, RGB Mode and resolution settings
Additionally, go to system settings and disable game mode, and then HDCP. Then reduce the resolution to Full HD (1080p) and check if you notice any improvements. Set RGB Mode to full or limited and test what works best for you. After you do all that, restart your PS5 to apply the latest changes.
Interestedly enough, some users solved the problem by putting the PS5 in the lying position. While this workaround may not yield positive results for all the gamers, give this potential solution a try and check if it works for you as well.
Unplug everything
Your PS5 screen flickering problem could be caused by handshake issues with the HDMI cable. To fix it, unplug your TV for one minute. Meanwhile, unplug your PS5 as well.
Make sure to unplug the HDMI cable from both ends. Then, plug the power cables back in, power up your TV and console and check if this method solved the problem.
Install the latest updates
Don’t forget to check for updates. Update the firmware version on your TV and install the latest PS5 system updates.
- On your smart TV, go to Settings, and them select Software update.
- On your PS5 console, go to Settings, select System, and then System Software. Select System Software Update and check for updates.
Adjust your screen size
Other PS5 users solved the screen flickering issue by adjusting the screen size to be a bit smaller than fully expanded. This method seems to have fixed the problem for many gamers. So, it seems there’s no flickering issue if the screen is not fully expanded.
Enable Performance mode
Go to your PS5 settings and enable Performance mode. Then, go to your game settings (Game → Visuals) and turn on Performance mode as well. Check if enabling Performance mode in both your console and game settings did the trick and stopped the screen flickering problem.
Send your PS5 console back to Sony
If nothing worked, your console might be faulty. Contact Sony support, and tell them what troubleshooting methods you tried so far. You may need to send in your console to Sony and have it repaired or replaced.
