This guide will show you how you can troubleshoot PlayStation 4 sudden shutdown issues. You’re going to make sure the power supply is working, and check the hard disk and cable connections.

My PS4 turns off randomly

Fix 1 – Wait for 10 minutes

If the sudden shut down was triggered by overheating issues, the best solution is to simply wait until the console cools down a bit. To check if this is the root-cause of the problem, touch the console and check for abnormal high temperature variations.

In many cases, the immediate shutdown is due to overheating. The processor will shut down the console instantly in order to protect it from further damage.

Overheating may damage the hardware, so there’s no point in trying to turn on the console. Instead, unplug all the cables and let the device cool down.

Fix 2 – Check the HDMI cable

If your PS4 suddenly shuts off, check for broken or damaged HDMI cables. Check the HDMI cable that goes into the console and make sure it has no scratches, and the little metal pins in it are not bent or broken. If this is the case, simply replace the cable.

Fix 3 – Dust your console

Some PS4 owners managed to quickly fix this problem by dusting their devices. If there is dust bothering a critical component, such as the fan sensor, this may cause overheating issues which will cause the console to shut down unexpectedly.

Grab an air duster, spray it through the fans and hard driver and check if the issue persists.

Fix 4 – Replace the power supply

Faulty power supplies are another common issue that could explain why your PS4 turns off by itself. Fixing this problem requires a bit of hardware work.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Remove the lid of the console.
  2. Take a screwdriver and unlatch all the screws in order to remove the power supply. Don’t forget to disconnect the cable from the power supply before you remove it.
  3. Slide the new power supply in place making sure that everything fits securely.
  4. Plug the cable back in and insert the screws.
  5. Place the console cover back on and turn on the device to check if this solved the problem.

Fix 5 – Send the console back to Sony

If the device is under warranty, contact Sony and send it in. The company will replace the problematic console as soon as possible.
